A week and a half before the official release date, Ridley Scott’s new film
American Gangster has been uploaded to the bit torrent networks and has
already been illegally downloaded by tens of thousands of people in the first 20 hours online.
The leaked movie's quality is reportedly as good as a retail DVD which is rare for a leak. Usually for a movie to be leaked onto the internet with such quality before the actual showing tends to be leaked from a DVD screener.
A DVD screener is a copy of the movie in DVD quality that is sent to members of the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who vote for the Oscar awards. However, Universal says that isn’t the case in this instance.
Michael Moses, a Universal spokesman said,
There have been no screeners sent out to members of the academy so that’s 100
percent impossible as the cause of how this leaked. The early release is disappointing and devastating, but unfortunately, it’s
part of doing business. This is not good news because this is not the kind of movie that one would want to see in a theatre. This is the kind of movie you want to sit at home and enjoy instead of being bothered every few minutes by a crying baby or a rowdy teenager.
I personally would not watch this in theatres and will wait for the release of it on DVD so I can pay attention to the movie or rewind it if I missed something. Sadly, when this very well received movie does not do well in theatres, the pirates will be blamed for it.
The pirates might have been a contributing factor to poor box office figures but I have not been compelled to go to the theatre since the beginning of this year. Not only because of the lack of films I'm interested in, it's also because I feel more comfortable watching it at home on a nice TV.
