coleslogo.gifThe phrase "The everyday, inspired" was accepted last week as a trademark in Australia. It is to be used as an alternative slogan to the current "Something better every day".

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Coles's new slogan will be accompanied by the red and white "curl in disk" logo which has been used for the Coles Group since November 2006.

As part of that application, Coles sought to stop rivals from using the name "Coles" in relation to "retailing of pharmaceuticals", even though the industry is closed to the big retail rivals Coles and Woolworths due to Australian laws.

It seems as though Coles still hopes it will be able to break into the $9 billion pharmacy market. This is not surprising as Coles's purchased an online service called Pharmacy Direct in 2006 for $44 million.

In 2005 Coles and Woolworths unsuccessfully lobbied the Federal Government in the hope that it would deregulate the sector and break the Pharmacy Guild's monopoly on selling prescription drugs, which is in place until at least 2010.
