Colgate-Palmolive Co. said that counterfeit toothpaste falsely packaged as its Colgate brand, and possibly containing a poisonous chemical, has been found in several dollar-type discount stores in 4 different states in the USA.
The counterfeit toothpaste is labeled "Manufactured in South Africa,"
the company said. Colgate-Palmolive said it does not import toothpaste
into the U.S. from South Africa."
"There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain diethylene glycol...[The Company] does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world", the New York consumer-products giant said in a statement.
The FDA has been warning consumers since May that diethylene glycol had been found in certain toothpastes imported from China into a number of countries. The agency has urged consumers to throw away toothpaste labeled as made in China. Most recently, there has been fake Corona beer that has been imported into the USA as well.
And the FDA has issued an Import Alert, blocking Chinese toothpaste containing the chemical from entering the U.S.
Diethylene glycol is used in antifreeze and as a solvent and it's been improperly used as a low-cost substitute for glycerin and proplylene glycol in pharmaceutical preparations," which have in turn poisoned and killed people worldwide, the FDA said in an updated Import Alert dated June 8
