durex-extra_strength2.jpgCouples are being warned about fake condoms being sold in East London as several packets of counterfeit Durex-brand were seized by Trading Standards officers at Hackney. The fakes were discovered in raids on corner shops and newsagents.

An investigation was launched when a member of the public noticing the condoms he bought were 'not quite right' and contacted the local authority.

Hackney's regeneration director Fiona Fletcher-Smith said

The man who reported this should be congratulated for alerting us to this scam. These fakes appear to be good copies, but are not an effective contraceptive and do not properly protect against sexual diseases.

Seven different fake three-packs have been identified with serial numbers. These are Extra Safe 20604354, Arouser 20906043, Ribbed 20905271, 20904142 and 2991118, Performa-TGL 4142, Gossamer 21405074, Select P4379 and Fetherlite 21405074.

Martyn Ward from Durex said

We take incidents like this seriously and adopt a robust approach to combat counterfeiters.

Also, before you use your condoms, make sure it's not expired and that there are no holes in them. Be safe and have fun!
