A traffic stop for an expired registration sticker resulted in the discovery of
illegally recorded movies and compact discs, and a man facing more than 100
counts for copyright infringement and packaging.
Police stopped the driver of a Chevrolet truck on Jan. 8 due to
an expired registration sticker on the license plate.
Before police had the vehicle towed, they questioned Michael Givins, 50, a passenger in the truck. Police said a black gym bag that belonged to Givins was inside the truck.
Givins permitted officers to search the bag, which contained bootlegged DVDs and
CDs, police said.
The bag contained 70 DVDs of various movies and 51 CDs of various artists.
Several of the movies were playing in theaters at the time, including “National
Treasure: Book of Secrets,” of which a copy was found in the bag.
Police learned that 62 of the DVDs were illegally recorded in theaters and 17
DVDs were packaged with counterfeit trademarks; 26 CDs were counterfeit and 25
were illegally copied, according to the criminal complaint.
Givins was charged with 62 counts of the manufacture and sale of an illegal
recording device, 42 counts of illegal packaging materials and 17 counts of
trademark counterfeiting.
