wipo.gifThe World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) received 39,945 international trademark applications last year (up 10% from 2006) under its system that allows firms to seek brand protection in up to 80 export markets.

According to Reuters, China was the country designated most frequently in the international filings, for the third year in a row, followed by Russia, the United States, Switzerland and the European Union.

Ernesto Rubio, WIPO's assistant director-general, said in a news briefing

China has become a very interesting market, and this is confirmed by the figures we have in international registrations. There is a need to protect trademarks because there is an interest in doing business there.

Hungarian pharmaceutical company Richter Gedeon GDRB.BU filed the most applications for trademark protection in foreign markets last year, followed by Swiss rival Novartis.
