piratebay.jpgI never thought that an intellectual property (IP) related story would make me laugh so hard. IFPI.com, the domain that used to belong to The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry or (IFPI), an infamous anti-piracy organization, has been transferred to The Pirate Bay, a notorious torrent tracking IP infringing organization.

The Pirate Bay team says it will use the domain to host the newly founded International Federation of Pirate Interests (IFPI).

According to TorrentFreak, the main domain of the IFPI, ifpi.org, is still working. However, when people try to access ifpi.com they are redirected to a Pirate Bay server, showing the text: “International Federation of Pirate Interests.”

One of the administrators of The Pirate Bay told TorrentFreak

International Federation of Pirate Interests (IFPI) is the new international federation we’re starting in order to get the word of piracy spread.

He goes on to say that the domain name was not acquired by any sort of hacking,

It’s not a hack, someone just gave us the domain name. We have no idea how they got it, but it’s ours and we’re keeping it.

Ah, perhaps I am just going a bit nuts but this just made me laugh out loud. I know pirates should not be encouraged and what they're doing is probably illegal but I couldn't help but laugh. Without pirates to push the boundaries and continue to challenge the IP laws that are in place right now, the world would be a very dull in my opinion.
